Mayor Mark Gerretsen Talks About Making Kingston a Senior Friendly City

Mayor Gerretsen opens the first annual Council on Aging 4 Life Expo held at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour March 8 and 9, 2014. Over 100 exhibitors and hundreds of attendees connected at this important event.

“The World Health Organization is encouraging communities to be more age friendly.  Kingston has now been designated as an age friendly city. This can involve simple planning like how far apart to place park benches to identifying what kinds of services older people seek and how do we connect them?”

Gerretsen went on to identify a startling statistic which put it all into perspective, “the WHO had determined that the year 2017 will be the turning point when there are more people in the world over the age of 65 than under the age of 14. This has never happened before and this huge demographic shift shows just how important this type of expo is.”
